Report: Spurs will meet with Serie A club in ‘coming weeks’ to discuss defender

According to Il Giornale, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to begin talks with Atalanta over a potential deal for Joakim Maehle over the coming weeks.

Spurs are expected to be in the market for a right wing-back this summer, with reports indicating that Antonio Conte has given the green light for Emerson Royal to be sold (The Sun).

The Daily Mail reported last week that Maehle is one of the options on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the summer.

The versatile Dane, who can play on either side of the backline, has not had the best of campaigns for Atalanta, having fallen down Gian Piero Gasperini’s pecking order.

However, according to Il Giornale, Conte has personally requested the Spurs hierarchy to snap up the 24-year-old this summer.

The report reveals that Tottenham have been following Maehle since back in 2019 when he was at Genk, with the North London club allegedly ready to make an offer of around €18 (£15.3m) for the player this summer.

It is stated that Atalanta will evaluate such an offer even though they rate the Denmark international highly.

Additionally, the report asserts that Spurs have a very good relationship with Atalanta following their acquisitions of Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini last month.

It is explained that the North London club will have a meeting with the Serie A side regarding Gollini’s future in the coming weeks and the two clubs are also expected to talk about Maehle during the meeting.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not convinced that Maehle would be an automatic starter for us, either at left wing-back or right wing-back. However, his versatility would make him a useful squad player since he would be able to cover both positions.
