Report: Spurs winger appears on radar of host European clubs – January loan possible

Steven Bergwijn has appeared on the radar of a number of clubs across Europe ahead of a potential move in January as Antonio Conte continues to assess the winger’s progress, according to The Athletic.

The Dutchman has struggled to break into the Tottenham line-up under the former Inter Milan manager, and has been limited to just 13 minutes of Premier League action since his arrival.

However, he seized his chance in the Carabao Cup with both hands last night, scoring one and assisting another in a 2-1 win over West Ham.

Despite this, should the lack of game time continue, The Athletic claim Bergwijn could move out of the club on loan in January, with a number of clubs around Europe staking their interest.

The report claims the 24-year-old has potential suitors in Italy, Spain, Germany and France, though Conte will continue to monitor him should he provide a good enough reason to force his way into regular contention.

Bergwijn has also been linked with a move back to his native Netherlands, with Ajax said to be the likeliest destination, though a formal approach has not been made as of yet.

Since signing for Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, Bergwijn has tallied just five goals and nine assists in 63 appearances. Much of his stint in North London, though, has been hampered by a series of injury issues.

Bergwijn is clearly one of the players who needs to prove himself to Conte and show that he is worthy of playing in his squad. Last night was the first step in that.

If things don’t improve then it seems all the more likely that an exit is on the cards in January, but if it is a loan move, then that could be good for him for more consistent minutes.
