Report: Spurs would have to break transfer record to sign 27-year-old

If the latest update from Sky Sport Italia (as relayed by Sempre Milan) is to be believed, Tottenham Hotspur would have to shatter their transfer record in order to sign Lazio superstar Sergej Milinkovic-Savic this summer.

Milinkovic-Savic has been consistent in his attacking output throughout the years at Lazio and the attacking midfielder has enjoyed another productive campaign this time around, with 10 goals and 11 assists in the Serie A so far (Transfermakrt).

La Lazio Siamo Noi reported last month that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are ‘crazy’ about the Lazio star and the North Londoners could launch an offer for the player if they qualify for the Champions League.

Calciomercato.it subsequently claimed that Maurizio Sarri had given the green light for the Serbian to be sold this summer and added that Spurs were facing competition from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain for the midfielder.

Sky Sport Italia have now backed up that claim, stating that Milinkovic-Savic’s journey at the Stadio Olimpico is about to come to an end this summer.

However, they assert that Lazio are looking for a whopping fee of €80m (£67.4m) for the 27-year-old.

That would require Tottenham to shatter their transfer record, with Tanguy Ndombele being the North London club’s most expensive signing at present at £55m (Guardian).

Spurs Web Opinion

Although Milinkovic-Savic can play as a part of a two-man midfield, he operates better in a more advanced role. So, unless Conte plans on shifting from a 3-4-3 to a 3-5-2 next season as his primary formation, I do not see Spurs shelling big money to sign the Serbian.
