Report: Spurs would have to pay £17.7m to sign manager from current club

The Guardian have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur target, Ruben Amorim, has a sizeable release clause in his contract with Sporting Lisbon.

Amorin’s name has appeared quite frequently over the last few weeks in various outlets while discussing Antonio Conte’s potential replacement at Spurs.

Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha revealed a couple of weeks ago that the Sporting Lisbon head coach is wanted by several clubs around Europe but it was Tottenham who were leading the race for his signature.

This was followed up by an update in the print edition of O Jogo (20/03/23 via Sport Witness) earlier this week, which also reported on the North London club’s interest in the Portuguese coach, with the publication suggesting that the Sporting boss is keen on managing in the Premier League.

The Guardian have now become the latest outlet to suggest that Amorim has his admirers among the Spurs board.

However, the report explains that it would be hard for the Lilywhites to lure the 38-year-old from Lisbon immediately as Sporting now have a Europa League quarter-final against Juventus to look forward to.

It is also revealed that Amorim has a release clause of €20m (£17.7m) in his contract, which would fall to around €15m (£13.2m) at the end of the season.

Spurs Web Opinion

It does not appear as if any of Tottenham’s top managerial targets, including Amorim, are likely to be available until the summer, which is why the club will likely have to install Ryan Mason as the interim.

I also do not expect the Sporting boss to be near the top of Paratici’s and Levy’s wishlists as it would be a risk to appoint an inexperienced manager, who is not proven at the top level.
