Report: Spurs youngster is heading to League Two side on loan

Attention may be firmly placed on the players coming in to Tottenham Hotspur this month, but amid all the noise there is a report suggesting Under-21 star Matthew Craig is set to join Doncaster Rovers on loan until the end of the season.

Matthew Craig developed through the Spurs academy, and has been on the cusp of the first team for some time now. He has one senior appearance to his name, with a 13 minute cameo in the final game of last season (Transfermarkt).

Having been handed his Spurs debut by Ryan Mason, Craig will have hoped to push on this year and establish himself within the senior squad, but has found opportunity hard to come by under new manager Ange Postecoglou and has remained with the Under-21 squad this term.

Matthew Craig off to Doncaster

Spurs have already arranged loan deals for a handful of youngsters this month, with Ashley Phillips and Josh Keeley the latest to depart. Now, we could see Matthew Craig follow in their footsteps in the pursuit of regular first team action.

That’s according to Football.London, who claim the 20-year-old is on his way to Doncaster Rovers for the remainder of the campaign.

The report states Craig will link up with the League Two side for the rest of the season, with a move away benefitting him as the “pathway to the first team [is] blocked at the moment.”

In the report, it is also suggested fellow youngster, Nile John, will also get a temporary switch away from Spurs this month, though his destination is unknown at this stage.

As the captain of the Under-21 side and a regular at that level, there could be an argument that Craig is better off staying with Spurs. But, you cannot underestimate the value of regular football at senior level, and a six-month stay in League Two will do Craig a world of good.
