Report: Star turned down summer Spurs move despite club agreeing fee

According to a report from AS, Villarreal defender Pau Torres turned down the chance to join Tottenham this summer despite the North London club agreeing on a fee for the defender.

Spurs strengthened their backline through the additions of Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal in the summer while Toby Alderweireld departed the club and Serge Aurier’s contract was terminated.

Torres was another name who was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, with the Premier League club thought to have tabled an offer worth £55 million for the centre-back.

AS have now revealed that the Spanish international rejected the chance to join the Lilywhites as he “preferred to wait for a better offer”.

The report explains that Torres would only leave his boyhood club if he has the chance to join one of Europe’s heavyweights.

The defender is also thought to be on the radar of Real Madrid, who allegedly view him as a potential replacement for Raphael Varane.

The longer we spend outside the Champions League, the more difficult it will get for us to attract top young talent to the club. This is why a top-four finish is arguably more important than a FA Cup or League Cup win if Spurs wish to fast-forward their rebuild.
