A report from The Daily Mail has looked into the stats behind the various centre-back pairings that Tottenham have fielded this season to deduce the North Londoners’ best duo.

All of Tottenham’s central defenders have been found wanting at various points this season, making some unforced errors that have cost the side points.

Jose Mourinho has chopped and changed his personnel at centre-back regularly and is seemingly yet to decide on his first-choice pairing.

The Daily Mail have now revealed that the pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier have the best record this season, with the pair keeping 5 clean sheets in the eleven league games they have started together, conceding just 0.7 goals per matches.

Alderweireld and Sanchez have the second-best numbers, conceding one goal per game, although the pair have started together just three times in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Dier and Sanchez have the worst record, with Mourinho’s men conceding 1.7 goals per game when the two have started together.

These numbers seem to demonstrate that we are better as a defensive unit when Alderweireld starts. However, one should not read too much into these stats as keeping a clean sheet is a collective responsibility and does not just depend on the centre-backs.

There are also some games where Mourinho has set the team up to be more expansive which would obviously translate to more goals conceded while we have played two holding midfielders to protect the back four in other matches.
