Report: Striker could join Mourinho’s Roma after Spurs had offer rejected

Reported Tottenham transfer target Sardar Azmoun could join Jose Mourinho’s Roma on a free transfer next summer, according to Calciomercato.

The report states the forward will leave Zenit St. Petersburg when his contract runs out next summer as he wishes to play in a more competitive competition than the Russian Premier League.

Roma are said to be one of the clubs sniffing around his signature and the Italian club are ‘thinking’ about signing the forward when he becomes a free agent.

That deal could see Mourinho get one over on his old club, as Spurs were linked with signing Azmoun over the summer. In fact, Azmoun himself revealed in an interview last week that ‘Tottenham made an offer but Zenit rejected it’.

The Iranian international is certainly putting himself in the window with his performances this season, scoring six goals in seven games across all competitions.

There will surely be a fight for the 26-year-old’s signature next year, with Mourinho’s Roma reportedly now involved.

Losing a player to Jose Mourinho’s Roma would be bitter, and you can imagine the sort of thing the Portuguese manager would secretly love.

As for Azmoun, he seems like a good goalscorer – the 26-year-old would make a good back-up to Harry Kane but he might want his big move to be somewhere where he would be a starter.

The forward probably wouldn’t get that at Roma either though with Tammy Abraham’s arrival.
