Report: Striker wanted by Spurs pens new contract with Serie A club

In what comes as a potential blow to Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan have confirmed that the North London club’s rumoured target Lautaro Martinez has signed a new contract.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Martinez during the summer transfer window but ultimately failed to lure the forward away from Inter.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealed at the time that Spurs had initially agreed on a €60m (£50.9m) fee for the 24-year-old but the deal fell through following Romelu Lukaku’s move to Chelsea, with Inter no longer needing the funds from the Argentine’s proposed sale.

It was reported at the start of this month that the reigning Serie A champions might cash in on the likes of Martinez in January, with the club still needing to find around £85m to balance the books.

However, Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta asserted a couple of weeks ago that Martinez will not be sold, insisting that it is only a matter of time before the striker pens a contract extension with the club.

That has now come to pass, with the Nerrazuri announcing that the Argentine international has committed his future to the club until 2026.

Signing Martinez was always going to be a longshot, especially given that the forward did not seem to be pushing for a move away from Inter. I suspect we only showed interest in the 24-year-old during the summer due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Harry Kane at the time.
