Report suggests Harry Kane will defy FIFA orders at World Cup if they deny request

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is pushing ahead with his decision to wear the OneLove captain’s armband for England when he plays at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, even if FIFA prohibits it.

As England prepare for the winter World Cup, the national team has plenty of issues to deal with if they are to be successful at the tournament. Gareth Southgate’s team are out of form and displaying a worrying lack of direction and tactical stability.

The tournament itself is under intense scrutiny, not least for the fact the competition is being hosted in a country with well-documented human rights issues (Sky Sports).

In addition to this, the development of stadiums around the country has led to workers being killed during the construction process (Sky Sports).

Qatar has strict rules and laws in place prohibiting certain behaviours for both citizens and visitors. In particular, the country is strongly against homosexuality, which has prompted various national team captains to outline their intentions to protest this at the tournament.

Harry Kane is one of those captains, and he previously stated he would be wearing a OneLove armband to ‘promote inclusion and send a message against discrimination’ (Mirror).

It is believed that FIFA will intervene and prevent anyone from including the OneLove armband as part of their kit for the games at the World Cup (Football Insider), but Harry Kane has not been deterred it seems.

According to Sky Sports, the English FA has doubled down on its intentions for Harry Kane to wear the armband which supports the LGBTQ+ cause.

Sky Sports said: “The governing body is determined the England captain will wear the armband even if it risks FIFA fines.”

I really hope the FA sticks to their guns and pushes ahead with the plan to get Harry Kane wearing the OneLove armband, regardless of any fines. Whatever penalty FIFA wants to throw at them, take it, and make the stand all the same.

This tournament shouldn’t be in Qatar in the first place, but we can’t change that now. That doesn’t mean we should shy away from the issues at hand while playing there.
