Report suggests Newcastle United may hijack Spurs interest in French striker

Tottenham Hotspur may find their efforts to sign French striker Marcus Thuram usurped by Premier League rivals Newcastle United, according to TeamTalk.

The 25-year-old has been at Borussia Monchengladbach since 2019, where he has scored 41 goals and provided 26 assists for the Bundesliga club (Transfermarkt).

Thuram, who is currently looking to add to his five caps with France (Transfermarkt) at the World Cup, is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and appears to be exploring his options.

Gladbach are reportedly set to cut their losses and sell Thuram in the January transfer window at a reduced price of around €10 million (£8.6 million) (Nicolo Shira) rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

Both 90 min and Gazzetta dello Sport (print edition 17/11/22) via Sport Witness have claimed Thuram is on Antonio Conte’s radar, but Spurs are not the only Premier League side looking at this cut-price option for the upcoming transfer window.

According to The Sun, Newcastle are also keen, and the player has even been offered to the Magpies already (GiveMeSport). The new report from TeamTalk insider Graeme Bailey appears to corroborate this information and suggests Newcastle may win the race for Thuram’s signature.

Bailey told TeamTalk: “Newcastle have got plans for January, there is no getting away from it and finances are in place. We have seen the announcement that the owners have invested more and also new sponsorship deals such as the most recent with Saudi Arabia’s main airline – they mean business.”

Apparently, “Newcastle’s brilliant start to the season will mean even more money being made available,” but Bailey insists the high-flying Magpies are more concerned with “quality over quantity” when it comes to the transfer market.

With Newcastle linked to plenty of targets, Bailey says “the emergence of interest of Marcus Thuram is not a shock,” and we should not be surprised to see a move come to fruition. Bailey believes “Borussia Monchengladbach are ready to sell the French star in January,” to avoid ending up with nothing in the summer.

“We need to remember that Gladbach had a similar situation with Denis Zakaria just 12 months ago, and they sold him before he could leave on a free and I expect the same could happen with Thuram. I would not rule Newcastle out,” Bailey concluded.

Spurs Web Opinion

For the price Borussia Monchengladbach are asking for Marcus Thuram, I think he’s the kind of player we should be seriously considering to bolster our attacking options. He’s a talented player, with a good level of experience, and would probably be fairly comfortable competing with Harry Kane without complaining about being on the bench from time to time.
