Report suggests Tottenham player could return from loan spell in January

Harry Winks’ loan spell with Sampdoria could be cut short with the player returning to Tottenham Hotspur in January, according to Italian outlet Club Doria 46.

Winks, who started his career with Spurs and developed through the ranks of the academy and youth teams, has made 203 appearances for his boyhood club through the years (Transfermarkt). He had never played for another club before, and he still hasn’t.

That’s despite joining Serie A team Sampdoria on a season-long loan in the summer. Due to an ankle injury, Winks is yet to make an appearance for the Italian side.

Back in November, Winks had surgery on the injury which is expected to keep him out until February 2023 (TuttoMercatoWeb). Just a few days ago though, CalcioMercatoWeb reported Winks had joined a training session with his Sampdoria teammates.

Regardless, it has been suggested that Sampdoria may look to renegotiate the terms of the loan agreement for the player (SampNews24).

That appears to be corroborated by the latest from Club Doria 46, who claim Winks “risks being cut already during the January transfer window,” amid growing frustration at the club with the fitness issue.

The report describes how Winks has spent “far too many months in the pits” and has “never played a full training session,” which leaves his future at the club in the balance.

Club Doria claim Winks’ condition will be monitored over the next month, and “if there are no significant improvements,” Sampdoria will look to end the loan agreement in the upcoming transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

As much as I don’t see a future for Harry Winks at Tottenham, I had high hopes that his time in Italy could be fruitful and see him flourish with a different style of football. It will be such a shame if the loan has to end early, and another setback for Spurs in trying to offload a player deemed surplus to requirements.
