Ahead of the group stage draw of the Champions League next week, Football.London have taken a closer look at the teams Tottenham could be drawn against.
Tottenham are back in Europe’s Premier League competition after a two-year absence and the North London club don’t have to wait much longer to find out who they will be going up against.
The final round of qualifying will conclude next Wednesday, with the draw for the group stages set to take place on Thursday, August 25 in Istanbul.
Pot 1 contains the 2021/22 Champions League and Europa League winners along with the league champions from England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Portugal while Pot 2 to 4 is decided based on each club’s UEFA coefficient.
Spurs have just about squeaked into Pot 2 with a club coefficient of 83, thanks in part to finishing as Champions League runners-up in 2018/19.
Here’s how the various pots look ahead of next week’s draw:
Pot 1: Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, Man City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, PSG, Porto, Ajax

Pot 2: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, RB Leipzig, Tottenham
Pot 3: Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Sporting CP, Bayer Leverkusen
Pot 3 or 4: Marseille
Pot 4: Club Brugge, Celtic
The remainder of the teams in Pots 3 and 4 will be decided based on the results of the final qualifying round. Here are the teams involved in the final play-off round:
Qarabag vs Viktoria Plzen
Bodo/Glimt vs Dinamo Zagreb
Maccabi Haifa vs Red Star Belgrade
Copenhagen vs Trabzonspor
Dynamo Kyiv vs Benfica
Rangers vs PSV Eindhoven
Football.London reveal that Benfica will take the final place in Pot 3 providing that they get the better of Dynamo Kyiv due to their higher coefficient rating.
If not, Rangers will be next in line to enter Pot 3 if they overcome PSV Eindhoven. The other clubs in the play-off round will enter Pot 4 if they progress to the group stage.
Spurs Web Opinion
Spurs could, in theory, end up in a group with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Marseille while they could also end up in an easy group with Porto, Shakhtar and Qarabag.
I do not think Conte will mind playing any of the big boys from Pot 1 but he will want to avoid Dortmund, Inter and Napoli from Pot 3 as that could potentially complicate our passage into the knockout stages.
