Report: There could be referees training with Tottenham from next season

The Daily Mail have revealed that Premier League referees could start training with clubs from the start of next season following a proposal put forward by Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.

In a recent summit between the managers of Premier League clubs and referee boss Mike Riley, Ragnick is said to have called for officials to train with clubs to allow players to get to know them better.

The Man Utd boss’ view was reportedly backed by his colleagues, who agreed that officials should be given access to the facilities at various Premier League clubs.

The official referee’s body PGMOL is now said to be studying the proposal and it could come into play from the 2022/23 season.

The report reveals that if the proposal is approved, Premier League officials could referee training-ground matches at various clubs.

In addition, several top-flight managers are also thought to have stressed the need for dedicated VAR officers during the meeting, with many wanting only the ones with the correct skillset chosen to operate the system.

Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche also allegedly expressed his concern about referees not implementing the laws of the game when it comes to simulation.

Dyche reportedly said during the meeting: “You can’t tackle but you can dive”.

Just as top-flight footballers need to train through the week to remain at their sharpest during matchday, the referees can only benefit from officiating fast-paced training ground games through the week.

The proposal could improve the quality of officiating and there could also be the added bonus of referees being able to forge a relationship with the players.
