Report: There is a ‘real possibility’ Spurs defender could leave on a free in 2024

The Athletic have claimed that Eric Dier could leave Tottenham on a free transfer when his contract runs out in the summer of 2024.

Even though Dier has struggled for consistency over the last few years and has come under a lot of criticism from the fans for some of his unforced errors at the back, he has continued to be a regular in the starting eleven under different managers.

However, the experienced centre-back has been benched by Ryan Mason in Tottenham‘s last three matches but that has not put an end to the team’s defensive struggles.

Eric Dier‘s current contract has a year left to run and multiple outlets, including Football Insider, have reported over recent weeks that Spurs are set to offer the 29-year-old a new three-year deal.

However, this claim has now been contradicted by The Athletic, who state that no new deal has been agreed as of yet.

In fact, the outlet adds that there is a ‘real possibility’ that Dier could now leave the North London club on a free transfer next summer.

I would be extremely surprised if Tottenham do not tie down Dier to a new contract.

Even if the next head coach decides that the centre-back is not part of his plans, the club would want to protect his value so that they get a decent fee for him in the market.

Spurs have nothing to gain by allowing the 29-year-old to run down his contract.
