Report: There is a sense Paratici misjudged Spurs player sales in January window

The Athletic have revealed there is a sense at Tottenham that Fabio Paratici has misjudged how much clubs would be able to pay for the players who were surplus to requirements in North London.

There was a big clear out at Spurs during the January window, with the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and Bryan Gil departing the club.

However, the Lilywhites were only able to loan out three of those four players, with Alli completing a permanent transfer to Everton.

Even the England international’s sale did not prove particularly lucrative for Spurs, with some sources suggesting the Toffees only owe £10m to Antonio Conte’s men for the midfielder once he has played 20 matches for them (Telegraph’s Matt Law).

The Athletic have now explained that Paratici approached many clubs over potentially buying some of Tottenham’s players but the Spurs managing director may have misjudged the financial capabilities of some of those clubs.

The report reveals that a senior figure at one major European club wondered why Paratici kept offering deals to buy or loan players that were never going to be attractive to the clubs in question.

The Spurs managing director is thought to favour swap deals but those kinds of transfers allegedly proved harder to complete given the disparity between the wages that Premier League clubs pay and clubs from other leagues around Europe.

Paratici would have likely found it much easier to do swap deals at Juve since Serie A clubs do not tend to pay massive wages. So, using the likes of Ndombele and Dele Alli in potential part-exchange deals was never going to be realistic, unless Spurs offered to cover a portion of their wages.
