It was announced earlier this week that the Premier League season had been put on a temporary shutdown until April 4 when a further decision will be made (BBC).
However, the report does not rule out further suspensions or a cancellation after that point, as the coronavirus continues to sweep across Europe.
Unfortunately, this leaves the current Premier League table up in the air, particularly for Liverpool who are just a couple of wins away from lifting their first title in 30 years.
Sky Sports have now listed three possible scenarios if the season is cancelled:
- The title is handed to Liverpool and no teams are relegated from the Premier League. However, the top two current Championship teams, West Brom and Leeds, and promoted to a 22-team 2020/21 season.
- The who table and season is declared null and void, meaning that Liverpool do not lift the title and no one is promoted or relegated.
- The current table is treated as the final table, despite being just 28/29 matchdays in.
