Report: Three Premier League clubs have now bid for Spurs-linked Gvardiol

A new report from Foot Mercato claims three Premier League clubs have made a bid to sign Croatia star Josko Gvardiol, but Tottenham Hotspur are not one of them.

The 20-year-old defender joined RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 and has developed into one of the most accomplished young centre-backs in world football since. With that, he has also become one of the most sought-after players across Europe.

His impressive displays at club level have been supplemented by a growing reputation on the international stage, too. Gvardiol made his breakthrough with Croatia at Euro 2020 and has built on that at the 2022 World Cup.

He now has 17 caps to his name for Croatia (Transfermarkt) and has been one of the stand-out performers in Qatar.

According to Tuttosport, it is Chelsea and Spurs who are battling it out for Gvardiol’s signature, while 90Min believe the Blues have the upper hand in the race. The race is wide open, though, if you believe Fabrizio Romano on the matter.

By the sounds of the latest from Foot Mercato, the fight to sign Gvardiol is much bigger than first thought, with multiple clubs believed to be chasing the young star.

Apparently, Chelsea have made an offer for Gvardiol ahead of the January transfer window, as have the two Manchester clubs. It is reported that City’s €100 million (£86 million) offer is the highest of the three at this stage.

The queue doesn’t end there, though, with the report also claiming top European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Juventus are tracking Gvardiol’s status.

I fear we have missed the boat on this one already, and every time Gvardiol puts in a top performance, he is making it more and more difficult for Spurs to compete in the race to sign him. He would be my number-one choice to improve our centre-back position, but I just can’t see it happening now with so many top clubs in the running.
