Report: Title-winning manager has now turned down Tottenham approach

According to journalist Ciro Venerato’s update on the La Domenica Sportiva programme (as relayed by NapoliCalcioLive), Luciano Spalletti has turned down Tottenham’s approach and agreed on a new deal with Napoli.

We covered a report from Kiss Kiss Napoli (via Area Napoli) earlier this week, which suggested that Tottenham were in pole position to snap up Luciano Spalletti.

The outlet explained that the next 20 days will be important in deciding the Napoli boss’ future as he will sit down with the club’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis to discuss the plans for next season.

Venerato has now confirmed that Tottenham did hold a ‘strong interest’ in Spalletti but the Italian has decided against taking the job.

The journalist revealed that the 64-year-old wants to build on his good work at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and has thus agreed on a two-year contract extension with an option of a third that would see him earn €4m (£3.4m) per season.

Spurs Web Opinion

I doubt if Spalletti was ever really on Tottenham’s shortlist.

In fact, it seems quite likely that the Italian coach’s camp fed the rumours to the press to strengthen their negotiating position during the talks over a new deal with the Napoli hierarchy.
