Report: Toby Alderweireld could play role in Spurs deal for PSG player

Toby Alderweireld could play a role in the potential transfer of Thomas Meunier to Tottenham this summer, according to the Daily Express.

The right-back is set to leave Paris Saint Germain this summer with his contract expiring and no extension offered to him by the Ligue 1 champions.

The report suggests that Spur head coach Jose Mourinho has already spoken personally to the 28-year-old, however, Alderweireld could be the influential factor in a potential move.

Spurs are hoping the infuence of Belgian teammate Alderweireld will help persuade the defender to join Spurs over the likes of Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.

It is believed the pair are close friends off the field having known each other for a number of years through the Belgian international set-up.

Meunier has featured 16 times for PSG in Ligue 1 this season with just over half of those appearances coming as a starter (Transfermarkt).

With Jose Mourinho looking to strengthen his defence this summer, Meunier could be a key addition to the backline after the club failed to sign a replacement for Kieran Trippier.

Alderweireld could be a really useful resource in tempting Meunier to join Spurs. The Belgian is now set to stay at Spurs until 2023 after having his contract extended in December so Meunier could pair up with his fellow Belgian for the next few seasons, at least.
