Report: Toby Alderweireld jets off to Qatar ahead of Tottenham exit

Toby Alderweireld is expected to arrive in Qatar later today after receiving an offer from Al-Duhail, according to Belgian football journalist Kristof Terreur.

The 32-year-old has asked to leave Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the new season and appears to be on his way to Doha.

Alderweireld has yet to report back to Hotspur Way for pre-season training following his involvement with the Belgian national side at Euro 2020.

His exit will bring to an end his six-year stint in North London after joining the club from Atletico Madrid and went on to make 236 appearances in Spurs colours in all competitions, scoring six goals (transfermarkt).

The Telegraph reported earlier this morning that Spurs had agreed a deal in the region of £13million with Al-Duhail and all that remained was for the defender to head to Qatar to undergo a medical and agree personal terms.

Alderweireld could certainly still play in many of Europe’s top leagues, despite being the wrong side of 30. However, he has seen other Belgian international’s ply their trade in the likes of China and still receive a call-up for international duty.

His partnership with Jan Vertonghen under Mauricio Pochettino was arguably the best pairing we have witnessed in decades at the club.
