Report: Tottenham academy midfielder returns to former club on loan deal

The Basildon, Canvey and Southend Echo have revealed that Tottenham academy midfielder, Chay Cooper has returned to Southend on a loan deal in order to get some experience under his belt.

The teenager moved to Spurs in 2017 after impressing for the Shrimpers at youth level and scored 16 goals with the Under-16 side for the Lilywhites, before being promoted to the Under-18s the subsequent year (Tottenhamhotspur.com).

He had a decent first season for the Under-18s but has since found playing time hard to come by (transfermarkt.com).

The 18-year-old is highly thought of at Spurs, with Football.London’s Alasdair Gold even naming him as one of the academy players to watch out for earlier this year.

However, it now looks as though he has decided to move back to the South coast in order to get game time this season.

According to The Echo, Cooper has played in the last two games for the Shrimpers’ under 23 side, including Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Oxford United.

Southend’s Under-23 coach Craig Fagan had this to say regarding the Spurs youngster: “He’s not on trial and he’s still with Tottenham but he wants to play games.

“He hasn’t played too many games for their under 23s so he’s with us now to play same matches, I think until Christmas.

“He’s one we know and trust. He’s another one with good ability but he maybe just needs to work on the other side of the game.”
