Report: Tottenham accelerate midfielder signing plan amid Bentancur injury

According to Football Insider, sources have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have accelerated their plans to sign a new midfielder in January following Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury.

Making his first start in nine months, Bentancur suffered an injury against Aston Villa after finding himself on the receiving end of a Matty Cash challenge. He hobbled off the pitch in the 30th minute.

Journalist Sami Mokbel on X revealed that the Uruguayan midfielder is expected to miss out on at least two-and-a-half months of action. Bentancur had just returned from an ACL injury.

Pape Matar Sarr also missed out on the last two games with an injury. Whilst Yves Bissouma has returned from suspension, it leaves Ange Postecoglou short of options to choose from in midfield.

In their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, Ange Postecoglou decided to deploy Giovani Lo Celso in a deeper midfield role. The Argentine had a good game and was handed a second straight start against Man City, scoring in both of those matches.

Spurs accelerate plans to sign a midfielder in January

The report has claimed that Tottenham could accelerate their plans to sign a midfielder in January, in the aftermath of the injury to Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguayan is expected to be out until at least February.

It must also be remembered that Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma will leave for the AFCON early next year. Thus, signing a new midfielder becomes a necessity.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s a shame that Bentancur is injured yet again. The poor guy just can’t catch a break. When fit, he is one of the best midfielders at Postecoglou’s disposal.

Taking into picture the AFCON situation, Spurs must look to sign a midfielder in January but they should also look to sign the right player. Signing someone for the sake of it doesn’t make sense. Let’s also hope Bentancur can recover from injury soon and help us in the business end of the season.
