Report: Tottenham among leaders in race for former Barcelona midfielder

Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of several clubs eyeing a move for Lecce midfielder Joan Gonzalez ahead of the January transfer window.

Gonzalez, who moved to Barcelona’s infamous La Masia academy in 2019, failed to make a single senior appearance for the Catalan giants before departing the club to join Lecce 18 months ago.

The central midfielder is having a breakthrough season at the Italian club, having started every single Serie A game so far this season, and registering three goal contributions (Transfermarkt).

Gazzetta claim that in light of the 20-year-old’s performances at Stadio Via Del Mare this season, Barca are already regretting letting the youngster leave the club.

The report alleges that Gonzalez has caught the attention of several clubs, including both Juventus and Borussia Dortmund.

However, it is explained that three Premier League clubs in the form of Spurs, West Ham United and Everton, are currently leading the race for the central midfielder.

Gazzetta add that Lecce value Gonzalez at €15m (£12.9m) and are willing to cash in on him in January.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is not surprising that Paratici has his eye on Gonzalez, given that the Spurs managing director of football tends to monitor the best young talent in Italian football closely.

If Tottenham do push ahead with a deal for the 20-year-old, I suspect it would be one similar to the Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie transfers, with the Spaniard being loaned back to Lecce.
