Report: Tottenham among those ‘showing interest’ in Bundesliga defender

According to a new report, Tottenham Hotspur are one of the many clubs keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, and the player himself is keen on a move to the Premier League.

Tottenham were in dire need of new defenders in the summer, after an abysmal showing from the Lilywhites’ backline last season.

The signing of Micky van de Ven went a long way to solving those issues, and he built an impressive partnership with Cristian Romero in the early stages of this campaign.

However, the young Dutchman sustained a hamstring injury at the start of last month, and Spurs’ defensive frailties have been exposed since.

While van de Ven is expected to return in the New Year, his injury has highlighted the fact that Spurs really need to reinforce their defensive roster further to avoid a repeat of this situation. It is now widely expected that Ange Postecoglou will prioritise the signing of a new centre-half in January.

Tottenham are interested in Jonathan Tah

On that front, the latest report from Kicker suggests Spurs are one of the teams tracking Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, with a move to the Premier League looking likely for the German defender.

It is thought Tottenham are “showing interest” in the 27-year-old ahead of the winter window, which is handy, as the player himself has a “fundamental desire” to play in the Premier League.

Back in the summer, Tah was happy to remain in the Bundesliga, but that stance has “apparently changed” now. Tah has shown signs of “fantastic development” this season, leading to many clubs being in pursuit of his services.

Tottenham are right in the mix according to the report, given their “acute needs” for new defenders, but there is a stumbling block. A move in January appears to be “virtually impossible” as Leverkusen do not want to sell.

However, Tah will have a release clause of just €18m (£15.4m) in the summer of 2024, which will greatly improve the chances of him leaving Germany.

Tah is a great player, and definitely someone we should be looking at. However, there is no point wasting time pursuing him in January, when his club don’t want to let him go. We might as well just wait until the summer and grab a bargain.
