Report: Tottenham and Arsenal could battle it out for Real Madrid player

According to the print edition of The Sunday Mirror – 14/5; page 69, Tottenham and Arsenal could battle it out for Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy this summer.

Mendy had been a regular in the Real Madrid starting lineup until last year but he has fallen down Carlo Ancelotti’s pecking order this campaign, having started less than half of the club’s league matches (Transfermarkt).

The Sunday Mirror claim that Madrid have informed the left-back that he can leave this summer as they wish to raise funds to pursue their transfer targets.

The report states that Los Blancos want around £17.5m for the 27-year-old, who is attracting interest from the Premier League.

Spurs are named one of the clubs who have their eye on Mendy, with the Lilywhites alleged to be ready to speak to the player’s agent regarding a summer move.

However, The Mirror add that Tottenham might face some competition for the Real Madrid star from their North London rivals, with Arsenal said to be keen on signing a left-back this summer.

The publication asserts that the Gunners might have an advantage over their local rivals as Mendy wants to play Champions League football next season.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I am excited to see how Destiny Udogie fares next season, there is no doubt that Tottenham would need to enter the market for a left-back, particularly if the club’s next head coach decides to play a back four.

Sessegnon has not proven to be good enough while Perisic is not suited to playing as a conventional left-back.

While Reguilon does have the attributes to play in a back four, injuries have completely hampered him over the last couple of years.
