Report: Tottenham and Chelsea are leading the race for Serie A star

According to the print edition of Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are currently the front-runners to sign Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

It was reported by the Italian press not long after Antonio Conte’s arrival at Spurs that the former Inter boss had asked the North Londoners to raid Juve for De Ligt.

De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola admitted last week his client is ready for ‘the next step’ in his career but hinted that a transfer was only likely to go through in the summer.

However, according to journalist Ekrem Konnur, the 22-year-old could leave the Allianz Stadium in January amidst Tottenham’s interest.

Sport have now offered an update on De Ligt’s situation, explaining that Juve are looking to cash in on the Dutchman to raise funds.

The report claims Spurs and Chelsea have ‘launched’ themselves towards the Netherlands international ahead of the January transfer window.

While Barcelona are also alleged to hold an interest in De Ligt, it is claimed that Catalan giants are not able to compete with the two London clubs for the centre-back due to their financial problems.

In addition, it is asserted that the bidding for De Ligt has already started, with clubs making contact with Raiola over a January deal.

De Ligt would be perfect for the left-centre-back position in Conte’s back three. While the Dutchman has not set the world alight at Juve, his talent has never been in question and Conte might be the man to get the best out of the centre-back.
