Report: Tottenham and Chelsea battling it out for 20-year-old centre-back

Calciomercato.it have revealed that Tottenham and Chelsea continue to battle it out for RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol after missing out on him during the summer transfer window.

It was reported during the summer that Gvardiol was one of the left-sided centre-backs on Antonio Conte’s radar along with the likes of Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni (Football.London).

However, Spurs eventually snapped up Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan move from Barcelona instead.

In the final week of the transfer window, it appeared as if Chelsea might swoop for Gvardiol, with the Blues alleged to have made an of €90m (£77.3m) for the player (Fabrizio Romano).

However, Leipzig confirmed on transfer deadline day that the 20-year-old had signed a 12-month extension at the Red Bull Arena.

Calciomercato.it have now revealed that Inter Milan also showed interest in Gvardiol during the summer but found themselves in a ‘very heated’ battle with Chelsea and Spurs, with the Nerazzurri deciding to withdraw from the race.

The report adds that the Croat’s value has now ‘shot up’ to around €60m (£52.2m) after he signed a contract extension with Leipzig.

It is explained that the two London clubs continue to have their eye on the Gvardiol, and could be about to battle for the centre-back’s signature over the coming transfer windows.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is evident that Conte wants at least one of Gvardiol or Bastoni for the left centre-back role, and it seems like a deal for the Croat will be much harder to pull off among the two, given his contract length and Leipzig’s relatively strong financial position.
