Report: Tottenham and Newcastle battling to sign Southampton defender

Sources at Football Insider have claimed both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are set to fight it out for the signature of Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Salisu has been with the Saints since the summer of 2020 having arrived from Spanish side Real Valladolid, and has adapted to the Premier League admirably during his time with the South Coast club.

The 23-year-old has racked up 79 appearances for Southampton, scoring one goal and registering one assist (Transfermarkt).

Salisu has also begun to establish himself at international level, with six caps for Ghana since making his debut back in September of last year (Transfermarkt).

The commanding centre-back has less than 18 months left on his current contract and there has been no word about a renewal at this moment in time.

With Southampton lying in the relegation zone right now, the club risk losing key players in the summer if they do drop to the Championship.

Salisu could be one of those players to move on, if the report from Football Insider is to be believed.

The outlet claim Spurs are keen on the Ghanaian and view him as a possible solution to their problems in the left-sided centre-back role.

Premier League rivals Newcastle United are also on the list of admirers for the player, and it is thought there are other teams in the league who are interested, too.

Sources suggest a summer move could be on the cards for Salisu, but whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen.

One would think Southampton’s final league position will be a big factor in whether the player departs.

Spurs Web Opinion

Mohammed Salisu is a decent player who has done a good job in a poor Southampton side over the years.

He’s strong, athletic, and comfortable on the ball, which definitely fits the bill for what Spurs are looking for.

He could be a good option if we are wanting to look at cheaper alternatives to the bigger targets in that position.
