Report: Tottenham and Newcastle could give England a problem this summer

Football.London have claimed that Gareth Southgate faces a ‘tricky situation’ with the selection of James Maddison for the Euros after Tottenham announced that they will be playing a post-season friendly in Australia.

It was reported by The Times a couple of days ago that just three days after Tottenham’s final Premier League game of the season Bramall Lane on 19 May, the squad will have to fly halfway around the world for a post-season friendly.

It was revealed that the Lilywhites had agreed to play Newcastle United on May 22 at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia.

The game has been billed as a homecoming for Ange Postecoglou, who grew up in the Victorian city and went on to play for and manage South Melbourne.

Spurs and Newcastle give Gareth Southgate a headache

However, Football.London point out that the decision poses a headache for Southgate, with the England boss likely to name Maddison as well as Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Kieran Tripper in the England squad.

England kick-off their European Championship campaign in Germany with the clash against Serbia on 17 June, which potentially means that Maddison and the Newcastle duo will hardly have any rest before they report to Three Lions camp following their friendly.

With these sorts of friendlies, there could be a contractual agreement for the best players to play, which is why Postecoglou might not be in a position to rest the players who would be involved in the Euros.
