Report: Tottenham and Newcastle keen on experienced £16.9m defender

Tottenham are keen on bringing Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij to the club ahead of next season, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

De Vrij, who turned 30 last month, has enjoyed a successful stint with Inter since his arrival in 2018. However, he is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Nerazzurri this summer (TransferMarkt).

TuttoMercatoWeb has now confirmed Tottenham’s interest in signing De Vrij, who is said to be valued by Inter at around £16.9 million (€20m).

However, the report states Spurs are not the only suitors with Newcastle also keen on luring the Dutchman to Tyneside, providing their Premier League status is secured next term.

De Vrij has undergone a patchy campaign for Inter this season, but has still been relied upon by manager Simone Inzaghi.

He has amassed 31 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt) en route to trying to help his side mount a defence of their Serie A title.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham do need defensive reinforcements and De Vrij boasts a wealth of experience that could be tapped into.

His age does seem to be a concern down the line which would mean a transfer would be a stop-gap, so Spurs should really pursue this as a last resort if they cannot secure a long-term option.
