Paris Saint-Germain have entered the race to sign FC Porto winger Pepe, but Tottenham Hotspur are already believed to have made the first approach for the player.
The 26-year-old – who has been capped six times by Brazil (Transfermarkt) – is one of the brightest talents in the current crop of Porto players.
While Porto may have been pipped to the Portuguese league title by Benfica last season, Pepe enjoyed a successful campaign from an individual point of view.
In 55 appearances across all competitions, the exciting winger bagged five goals and contributed ten assists (Transfermarkt).
It seems his future may well lie away from Portugal now, however. Despite being contracted until 2027, a queue of admirers are now knocking at the door for Pepe’s signature.
Tottenham Hotspur are keen to find new players to add to their squad, particularly ones who can add a spark of creativity in attacking areas, and that’s where Pepe could come in.
Tottenham and PSG fighting over Porto’s Pepe
In the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, it is claimed that Spurs and PSG are going head to head in the pursuit of Pepe during the summer transfer window.
Both clubs are expected to “attack” when it comes to negotiations for the player. Apparently, Tottenham have already made an offer for Pepe, but it is believed to be “still far” off the value Porto expect.
The Portuguese giants are looking for Pepe’s €75 million release clause to be met if he is to move on this summer.
It remains to be seen whether either of the interested parties would be willing to offer that much for the player.
Spurs Web Opinion
I have to admit I am not overly familiar with the abilities Pepe possesses, but from the little I have seen and heard, he is a very talented player.
I can’t quite see him being worth the release clause Porto want though, and we should definitely be using that kind of money elsewhere.
