Report: Tottenham approach has ‘distracted’ player from move to Serie A

The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (11/08/22 – as relayed by Sport Witness) has claimed that Tottenham’s approach for Memphis Depay has complicated Juventus’ efforts to sign the Barcelona forward.

Spanish publication Sport reported earlier this week that four clubs had made an approach for Depay this summer, including Spurs and Juventus.

The report explained that the striker was not particularly enthusiastic about the idea of joining Antonio Conte’s side and favoured a move to the Serie A giants instead.

However, Gazzetta have now claimed that Spurs’ ‘entry on the scene’ for Depay has caused a ‘pause’ in the dialogue between the Juventus hierarchy and the Barca star.

The report claims that until Tuesday, there was a ‘great wave of optimism’ among the Bianconeri that they would win the race for the Netherlands international.

However, the 28-year-old is said to have been ‘distracted’ by Tottenham entering the equation.

Gazzetta add that as things stand, the North London club have not made a concrete offer for Depay and are merely ‘flirting’ with the idea of signing him.

It is quite possible that the Spurs hierarchy started exploring a move for Depay once they realised a move for Zaniolo would be difficult to pull off. However, I just do not see why the 28-year-old would want to come to Spurs to warm the bench while he could play regularly at Juventus.
