Report: Tottenham are circling over centre-back who has a £60m release clause

Sky Sports Germany reporter Philipp Hinze has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan ahead of the summer transfer window.

The versatile Simakan, who has also featured at right-back on a few occasions, has come on leaps and bounds over the last two years and the defender is thought to be eyeing a new challenge this summer.

Hinze says that the 23-year-old is open to leaving the Red Bull Arena this summer and is attracted by the prospect of playing in the Premier League.

However, it is explained that Simakan would only leave Leipzig for a club where he feels he can take the ‘next step’ in his career.

Hinze reveals that Tottenham are not the only ones eyeing a move for the Frenchman, with Newcastle United also keeping an eye on his situation.

The journalist states that the centre-back has a release clause of €70m (£60m) in his contract.

He adds that Leipzig are protected by the release clause and with the Bundesliga club not in a hurry to let Simakan go, they are expected to demand a big fee for the player.

Simakan would fit the bill nicely for Spurs as not only can he cover for centre-back but he could also be used as a backup to Pedro Porro at right-back, thus potentially allowing the Lilywhites to cash in on Emerson Royal.
