Report: Tottenham are competing with West Ham for South American starlet

According to Planet Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in Santos starlet Leonardo Zabala.

Zabala left Palmeiras to join Santos’ youth set up last summer and, despite the fact he is yet to make his senior debut for the Brazilian giants, the centre-back has already been capped by Bolivia.

The 18-year-old, who is comfortable playing both on the left and right side of central defence, is thought to be a wanted man among in Europe, according to Planet Sport.

The report claims that a number of Premier League clubs are looking at Zabala as a big prospect ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is alleged that Tottenham and their London rivals West Ham are currently leading the race for the teenager’s signature.

It was previously reported by The Telegraph that signing a left-sided centre-back was one of Spurs’ priorities when the transfer window reopens in the summer after the club failed to strengthen their central defensive ranks in January.

Fabio Paratici’s team of scouts will likely have their eye on many young talents in South America and Zabala could be one of them.

However, that does not mean that the North London club are likely to bid for the Bolivian. Even if they pursue the 18-year-old, like Pape Sarr, he would likely be viewed as one for the future rather than as a player who would strengthen our starting eleven.
