Report: Tottenham are now ‘favourites’ to land 21-year-old defender

According to Tutto Juve, Tottenham Hotspur have now moved into pole position ahead of Juventus to sign Bologna centre-back Riccardo Calafiori.

Calafiori has not put a foot wrong since joining Bologna from Basel last summer, impressing with his composure and his versatility.

Over the last couple of months, a number of Italian outlets have suggested that Spurs are set to battle the likes of Juve, AC Milan and Napoli for the 21-year-old’s signature (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Just a couple of days ago, Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport that the Lilywhites might not find it easy to sign the Italian defender after the Bianconeri made him their number-one transfer target ahead of the summer.

Spurs leading race for Riccardo Calafiori

TuttoJuve have now also backed up Tottenham’s and Juve’s interest in Calafiori and have suggested that the two clubs are set for a transfer battle.

However, interestingly, the report says that the Premier League side are ‘first in line’ and currently the ‘favourites’ to win the race for the centre-back as they have ‘greater liquidity’ than Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

The publication does not reveal the fee Bologna are demanding for Calafiori and if Tottenham are willing to match that amount.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the recent links to the likes of Calafiori, Alessandro Buongiorno and Albert Gudmundsson, it does seem like Tottenham are turning to the Italian market again for their summer shopping. One can understand why Spurs would do so, given the success the club have had with their recent recruits from Serie A.
