Football.London have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur will discuss proposals for a statue of legendary manager Bill Nicholson as well as for the repurposing of the iconic White Hart Lane gates in the first meeting of the newly formed fan advisory board.
Bill Nicholson is widely recognised as the biggest legend in the club’s history and is still seen by most fans as ‘Mr Tottenham‘, having spent his entire playing career at White Hart Lane before going on to manage the club for 16 years.
During his stint as manager, he led the Lilywhites to a league title, three FA Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup, all while playing a brand of champagne football that forever became associated with the club.
Football.London reveal that Tottenham first announced back in 2010 that they would be commissioning a statue of their most successful manager, who passed away in 2004, to be positioned between the gates outside the new stadium.
However, the plans were seemingly shelved due to the delay in building the new ground and when the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium eventually opened in 2019, the White Hart Lane gates were put into storage and the statue was no longer mentioned.
The report adds that dialogue regarding the statue and the gates is now set to be set to take place at the inaugural meeting of the new fan advisory board in July.
Spurs Web Opinion
While the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is undoubtedly one of the best sporting venues in the world, it does feel a little soulless at times due to the lack of heritage.
The club’s plans to add some of the features of the Old White Hart Lane, including the iconic Cockerel Clock and the gates, will certainly help remedy that.
Most Spurs fans would also agree that a Bill Nich statue has been long overdue.
