Report: Tottenham are still looking at Serie A manager should Conte leave

Fresh reports from Italian outlet CalcioMercatoWeb suggest Tottenham Hotspur are still looking at Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri as an option in case Antonio Conte leaves his position in the summer.

Conte has been with Tottenham since November 2021 and, while enjoying a fantastic season last year where Spurs finished in the top four, things have not quite gone to plan this term for the Italian.

Tottenham have been criticised for their style of play this year, with results proving to be inconsistent and disappointing. The North London side are currently in fifth place in the Premier League, but have their work cut out to catch the top four teams.

Off the field, it’s also been a very difficult year for Conte, with friends passing away and illness striking the 53-year-old earlier this month. Conte himself has even admitted how tough he has found it being away from his family in Italy of late (Telegraph).

Conte’s current contract ends this summer, and while Spurs do have the option to trigger an extension, nothing has happened yet on that front (Football.London).

Speculation is rife that Conte would consider a return to Italy, which leaves Tottenham hedging their bets and thinking about a replacement.

This isn’t the first time Sarri has been linked to the role either, with Il Messaggero reporting the club had earmarked the former Chelsea boss previously. Now, it is thought a series of events could lead to a bit of managerial musical chairs.

The report claims Conte may take the job at AC Milan in the summer, while Sarri would replace him at Spurs. That would then open the door for Stefano Piolio, the current Milan manager, to return to Lazio in a sensational three-way swap.

I honestly wouldn’t be all that surprised to see this exact situation play out over the summer. If Conte does get the chance to return to Italy I think he will, and then the rotating doors begin as managers become available, so there’s every chance we would take a chance on the ex-Chelsea man.
