Report: Tottenham closing in on deal for 25-year-old French star

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Olympique Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson, according to a report from Le10Sport (as relayed by Tribal Football).

Sanson has been a consistent performer in the heart of Marseille’s midfield since arriving from Montpellier in January 2017.

The 25-year-old has come of age in the last two seasons, evolving into one of the leaders on the pitch for Les Phoceens.

It was reported last month that Sanson’s agent, Pini Zahavi, had offered the midfielder to Spurs as the Ligue 1 club are desperate for a cash influx due to the financial impact of COVID-19.

It was claimed that the Frenchman had also been offered to West Ham but that he prefered a move to Spurs (L’Equipe via Sport Witness).

Le10Sport now reveal that Sanson is edging closer to a move to North London, with Zahavi said to be confident he can get his client a move to Spurs.

The report suggests that Jose Mourinho is keen on signing a player of the 25-year-old’s profile and the Lilywhites have thus been established as the favourites to finalise the deal.

Spurs Web Opinion

Sanson is a tidy player and is quite well-rounded, capable of winning the ball back, having a decent passing range, and being capable of playing out of tight spaces. However, there is no one thing that he particularly excels at. It is also clear that we already have quite a few box-to-box central midfield options in Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Gedson Fernandes. What we need is an out and out defensive midfielder like Gerson or Hojbjerg.
