According to the Athletic, coaches at Tottenham Hotspur believe that defender Japhet Tanganga has the potential to be a ‘phenomenal’ right-back.
The 22-year-old has gained plenty of plaudits since his fantastic defensive display against Manchester City, where Tottenham stunned the champions 1-0 thanks to a Son-Heung Min goal.
Despite Son’s winner, the shining light of the afternoon was right-back Tanganga, who got the nod ahead of Matt Doherty/Serge Aurier and dealt with the threats of Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling extremely well.
The performance came just at the right time for the 22-year-old, as it was reported that Tottenham had accepted a loan proposal for the defender from Turkish side Galatasaray.
However, it is now reported that Tottenham have pulled the plug on the deal as Nuno has changed his mind after Tanganga’s impressive performance against Man City.
Coaches at Spurs told The Athletic that Tanganga has the skillset to develop into a ‘phenomenal’ right-back, but it is his final-third output that is the most pressing area for him to fine-tune.
Tanganga was absolutely amazing against Man City and it does not surprise me that coaches around Spurs hold that opinion. He has all the ingredients to make it to the very top. It is now a case of avoiding injuries and staying consistent.
