Report: Tottenham considering La Liga defender as Alderweireld replacement

Tottenham Hotspur central defender Toby Alderweireld was tipped to leave the club last summer after it was reported that the club had failed to make a breakthrough in the negotiations with the Belgian’s representatives over a new long-term deal.

However, the defender has featured much more regularly for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season and has looked back to his reliable best.

With the club recently taking up the option to extend the defender’s contract until the summer of 2020, it has triggered a clause which states that the club must accept a bid of £25million or more if it arrives next summer and comes before the final two weeks of the transfer window.

It appears Spurs could be preparing themselves for life without the former Ajax man after being linked with several defenders in recent weeks.

The latest player to be linked with a move to Spurs is Real Betis defender Aissa Mandi, following a report in Spanish news outlet ElDesmarque.

Mandi has been one of Betis’ standout players this season, making 33 appearances so far across all competitions.

According to the report, Arsenal have also expressed their interest in signing the 27-year-old, who has a release clause of around £26 million.
