Report: Tottenham considering move for young Championship defender

The Telegraph have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Blackburn Rovers centre-back Ashley Phillips.

Spurs did not manage to strengthen at centre-back during the January transfer window but The Telegraph claim the North Londoners view the position as a priority to upgrade in the summer.

While the report names a handful of centre-backs across Europe who are said to be on Tottenham’s radar, interestingly Phillips is also named as a player that Antonio Conte’s men have their eye on.

The 16-year-old is yet to make his senior debut at Ewood Park but he was named on the bench for their FA Cup tie with Wigan Athletic in January.

Phillips has impressed for the Rovers’ Under-23s and has already featured twice against Tottenham this season (Transfermarkt).

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray lavished praise on the teenager back in November, labelling him a ‘phenomenal’ talent and insisting he has ‘got every attribute’ that one looks for in a central defender (Lancs Live).

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s pursuit of Phillips is likely to be independent of our attempts to sign a top-class central defender, who can improve our starting eleven immediately.

All signs point to the fact that a left-sided centre-back would be Conte’s priority in the summer but that could change depending on what happens over the coming months.
