Report: Tottenham could face competition from two PL rivals for Pau Torres

The Daily Mail have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could face competition from both Chelsea and Manchester United for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres.

Sky Italia (07/06/22 – as relayed by GIFN) reported earlier this week that Spurs have now begun working on a part-exchange deal to sign Pau Torres, with the North London club said to be willing to include Giovani Lo Celso as part of the deal.

The Argentine shone on loan at El Madrigal during the second half of the season and Unai Emery’s side were alleged to be keen on snapping him up permanently.

This has now been backed up by The Mail, who reveal that Antonio Conte’s men have turned their attentions to Torres after their pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni fell through.

The report explains, however, that Spurs would need to pay a significant amount of cash on top of Lo Celso, with the Argentine valued at around £18m while Torres’ release clause stands at £55m.

It is asserted that Man Utd and Chelsea could battle Spurs for the Villarreal centre-back but it is explained that Lo Celso could prove the ‘vital key’ to help the Lilywhites beat their rivals to the Spain international’s signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think the transfer fee is going to be an issue for Spurs in their pursuit of Torres, given that they were presumably ready to pay a similar fee for Bastoni.

I suspect that there is a small chance that we might see the North London club make concrete advancements towards Gvardiol, now that the Bastoni deal seems to have fallen through.
