Report: Tottenham could fight Mourinho to sign Man United starlet in January

Tottenham are reportedly keen to sign young Manchester United star Charlie Wellens in January, according to The Sun.

The 19-year-old, who can play as a right-back and midfielder, was initially bumped up to Red Devils’ first-team training by then-United boss Jose Mourinho to give him an opportunity to gain more senior experience.

The Sun report the Portuguese coach, now at Roma, still wants to sign Wellens and even wanted to bring him to Tottenham during his relatively short tenure in North London.

The report claims Tottenham are still interested in the current United Under-23s player, with a battle for his signature between Antonio Conte and Mourinho tipped to ensue during the January transfer window.

Wellens has featured prominently in the reserve side this season, making 14 appearances in the Premier League 2 while notching a goal and four assists.

The teenager was also drafted into United’s Champions League squad for their group match against BSC Young Boys earlier this season.

This interest definitely seems pretty solid and there is a reason why Mourinho wanted to acquire him for Spurs, and now for Roma. He seems fairly adaptable in terms of positioning, which is always a bonus when signing a young player.
