According to a report in El Partidazo de COPE (25/10/22 – as translated by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are covering Sergio Reguilon’s entire wages over the course of his season-long loan spell at Atletico Madrid.
Reguilon missed Tottenham’s final five matches of last season due to a groin problem and the Spaniard reportedly had surgery to fix the issue back in August.
The 25-year-old is yet to make a single matchday squad for Atletico since making a loan switch to the Spanish capital.
However, that might be soon about to change, with Mundo Deportivo reporting last week that the left-back had his first training session with his teammates, almost 50 days on from his loan move to Atletico.
El Partidazo de COPE have now backed up that claim, explaining that Reguilon is in the final stages of his recovery. The report states that Atletico knew about the former Real Madrid man’s injury problems when they signed him on loan in the summer.
It is asserted that Diego Simeone’s side agreed to the deal since Spurs were ready to cover Reguilon’s full wages, with the North London club not wanting the left-back to ‘stand still’.
The report adds that the Spain international was ‘happy to leave’ when he heard of Atletico’s interest.

It seems like Reguilon’s recovery time was known by all parties, which is perhaps why Spurs agreed to cover his wages over his loan spell. That is seemingly not the case with Winks, with reports from Italy indicating that Sampdoria did not expect the midfielder to be out of action for this long.
