Report: Tottenham deal for defender ‘not even close’ at the moment

Clement Lenglet’s future at Barcelona looks no closer to being resolved despite rumours of a potential return to Tottenham Hotspur during the current transfer window, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Catalan news outlet have claimed that a move to Tottenham is ‘not even close’ at the moment with the French international’s future at the Nou Camp still up in the air.

Clement Lenglet not close to sealing Spurs move

Lenglet was given an extra week off from returning to pre-season with the Catalan giants in the hope that he would have sealed his exit by now and had been training alone at home, but is currently set to report back on Monday.

Sport claimed earlier this week that Barcelona have set a deadline of the middle of next week for a deal to be reached with the La Liga outfit refusing to budge on their €15m (£12.8m) valuation of the French international.

Tottenham, however, do not want to pay more than €5m (£4.2m) for the defender since they highlight there should be a discounted rate since they would be taking on his salary.

If a deal is not reached by July 19th, it could cause an additional headache for Barcelona with the player not in Xavi’s plans and will not be part of the club’s tour to the USA and will instead remain back in Catalonia to train with club staff.

The 26-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists (transfermarkt).

Tottenham know that they are in the stronger position of the two clubs with Barcelona desperate to get Lenglet off their wage bill to help alleviate their financial issues.

At present, it looks as if the club are currently focusing on negotiating deals for one of Edmond Tapsoba or Micky van de Ven.
