Report: Tottenham emerge as favourites to sign 21-year-old defender

Tottenham have emerged as favourites to sign Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence in this summer’s transfer window, according to Goal.

Spence, who signed a contract with Boro until 2024 before moving on loan to Nottingham Forest, has impressed during his stint at the City Ground this term.

His displays in the early parts of the campaign led a host of clubs to chase him over the January transfer window, with Tottenham allegedly going as far as having two bids turned down (ESPN).

But, despite the failure to land Spence last month, Goal claim that Spurs are now in pole position to be Spence’s new club come the end of the season.

The report states Spurs, who have continued to monitor Spence’s progress, have leaped ahead of the competition and are now the favourites to sign him this summer.

However, it adds that several other Premier League sides are in contention as well as a host of sides from Germany’s top-flight.

It comes after Sky Sports reported that Bayern Munich have joined the hunt for the 21-year-old earlier this week having monitored his performances over recent games.

Spence has recorded 32 appearances this season (Transfermarkt) which have included impressive showings after Forest knocked out Arsenal and Leicester in the FA Cup.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have a bit of an issue on the right side and they have made their interest in Spence known in recent months. He has been dominant on that flank this season which is why so many clubs are in the hunt for him.

Granted it won’t be easy to secure him, but the fact they are allegedly ahead of everyone else is surely a good sign ahead of the summer.
