Report: Tottenham emerge as ‘main candidates’ to sign 24-year-old full-back

Tottenham are leading the race to sign Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan, according to Marca.

The 24-year-old linked up with Villarreal from Watford in 2020 after failing to make a single appearance for the Hornets between a series of loan spells.

Estupinan has since made the Yellow Submarine his home racking up 73 appearances in total under manager Unai Emery (Transfermarkt).

But Spanish publication Marca claim the Ecuador international could be on the move again this summer, with Villarreal listing him as available for transfer to balance the books after missing out on Champions League qualification.

The report names Tottenham as the ‘main contenders’ to land Estupinan, while adding that wantaway midfielder Giovani Lo Celso could be used as a potential makeweight to facilitate a move.

Lo Celso spent the second half of last term on loan with Villarreal and impressed for the Spanish side, who are now keen on retaining him heading into next season (Fabrizio Romano).

Spurs’ interest in Estupinan comes after having already acquired free agent Ivan Perisic, who joined the club earlier this month after seeing his Inter Milan contract come to an end.

Spurs Web Opinion

Estupinan is an interesting one given Spurs have just signed Perisic with the intention likely to deploy him mostly at left wing-back.

He has emerged as a very handy player of late for Villarreal and he will likely be available at a decent price. There are definitely better options out there, but Spurs should keep him in their thinking just in case.
