Report: Tottenham enter ‘state of panic’ after losing out on Diaz and Traore

The Telegraph report that Tottenham have now entered a ‘state of panic’ heading into next Monday’s transfer deadline after losing out on deals for Luis Diaz and Adama Traore in the past 24 hours.

Tottenham spent the majority of the window chasing Wolves winger Traore but lost out to the Spaniard’s former club Barcelona, who intend to complete an initial loan deal with an option to buy for €35m (£29m) at the end of the season (BBC Sport).

The Guardian also reported Spurs emerged as leading candidates to secure Porto and Colombia winger Diaz and, despite seeing one bid rejected this week, were overtaken in negotiations by long-term admirers Liverpool (Daily Mail).

Sky Sports claims Jurgen Klopp’s side were primed to make a move for the 25-year-old in the summer, but Tottenham’s pursuit brought forward those plans.

The devastating developments mean Spurs have yet to bring in any recruitments this month, with The Telegraph now suggesting an element of panic has set in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with just three days until the deadline.

Spurs remain in talks to sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat (Sky Sport Italia), while The Athletic reports fresh talks are in play with Juventus to sign 21-year-old forward Dejan Kulusevski.

With so little time left until the deadline, Spurs have it all to do to salvage what has been a pretty wretched January transfer window. It is possible for Spurs to secure a couple of deals, but it could have been so different if other things fell into place quicker, and ultimately a lot earlier.
