Report: Tottenham expected to support voluntary shirt sponsorship ban

A football finance analyst has reportedly suggested to Sky Sports that Tottenham would be one of the clubs expected to support the Premier League’s proposal to ban betting shirt sponsorships.

Tottenham have had had gambling sponsors in the past including MansionBet but the North London club currently do not have any betting shirt sponsorships.

Sky Sports have now revealed that the Premier League have asked all the top-flight clubs to support phasing out shirt sponsorship from gambling companies.

The PL is said to have contacted the clubs regarding the issue on Monday in order to avoid a government-imposed ban which could soon be on the way.

While the voluntary ban would come into effect from next season under the proposal, the existing deals would be allowed to run their course provided they expire by the 2024/25 campaign.

The report states that the issue is a complicated one to address as several top-flight clubs have become reliant on revenue from the gambling sector.

It is explained that the proposal must be supported by at least 14 of the 20 clubs for it to be adopted.

The report adds that, according to a football analyst, Spurs and the other five members of the ‘big six’ would be expected to support the proposal as none of them have existing shirt sponsorship deals with gambling companies.

This is a step in the right direction, and the Premier League would have been aware that they run the risk of a government-imposed ban if they do not come up with a plan to phase out gambling sponsors.

Tottenham would have certainly been aware of which way the wind has been blowing on this issue over recent years, which is perhaps why the club have chosen not to accept gambling sponsors.
